Koontz 1945 doğumlu olup halen A.B.D.’de yaşamaktadır. İlk öyküsünü 1967,ilk romanını da 1968 yılında yayımlamıştır.Amerika’nın en populer gerilim romancısı olarak kabul edilir.Eserlerinin ezici çoğunluğu sıradışı konulardır.Fantezi,bilimkurgu ve korku unsurlarını ustaca işler.Koontz,1980 yılına dek eserlerinde yazar olarak değişik isimler kullanmıştır.Yazarın çeşitli deneme yazıları,çocuk kitapları ve sanaryoları da vardır.Pekçok eseri filme çekilen Knootz’un kitaplarından bazıları şunlardır:
